POTTERIES

Over 1500 potteries are known to have operated in the Staffordshire district alone. This database does not attempt a comprehensive description of these potteries but concentrates on those identified on ceramics in New Zealand historic sites. You can view information on individual potters and their marks on the posttery.

Edward Walley

Country: EnglandDate Range:
Description: Cobridge, Staffordshire; 1845-56 (Godden 1968:129). One transfer-printed mark that reads ?EDWARD WALLEY. CORBRIDGE STAFFORDSHIRE? occurred on the base of a relief moulded semivitreous (possibly) stoneware bowl in conjunction with an appliqué registration mark; pattern 317. The manufacturer?s name and the Staffordshire district are also included in the appliqué mark. In addition, the appliqué mark supplies the pottery name ?VILLA POTTERY?, the name ?DIANA? and two separate dates. The first date is a registration date of June 1850. The second date appears to read ?JULY 1853?. Unlike transfer-printed vessels where the design name refers to the printed pattern, the registered names found on moulded semivitreous wares such as ?Diana? usually refer to the shape of the vessel body itself rather than the relief moulded motif or design (Majewski and O?Brien 1987:154). The registration date included in this mark indicates that Walley registered the ?Diana? shape (or possibly design) in June 1850. The second date included in this mark ?JULY 1853? may refer to the date of productionSource:
