Hannibal Passing the Alps ()
Description:
| Technique: Transfer-print | Archaeological Notes: The central scene of this light blue design presents a battle involving an elephant, horses and foot soldiers. The rim design incorporates a medallion border depicting a procession of elephants and horsemen alternating with a floral motif (see illustration in Coysh and Henrywood 1984: 170; and Best 1992: 74, plate 26, b). The only recorded manufacturer of this design is Knight Elkin & Co (Coysh and Henrywood 1984: 170). Although this pattern has now been retrieved from several historic sites, as yet no manufacturing marks have been recorded to confirm this manufacturer. |
